Writtle CC Club Records (1947-2009)
Writtle Cricket Club Records 1947-2009 Compiled by Peter Ely The statistical records of the Club have been updated to the end of the 2009 Season. I first started to try to put together some records for the Club in the late 1980s, and did produce some information for the Period 1972 to 1987 in that year. I was subsequently able to go back further, but I found that it was really only the local Newspapers that were of significant help to me. That is not to discount the help given by Ron Thrift and Len Underwood, and the few Clubs whose records are intact. However, it was the hours spent in Chelmsford Library that enabled me to produce the pre 1972 information. It is somewhat ironic that I was extracting information that was given by the Club to the Newspaper in the first place. Most of the batting records are comparatively recent and the bowling records in the earlier part of the period. There are, no doubt, many reasons for this, but the most obvious is that pitches are much better now and the best bowlers do not bowl anywhere so many overs. I personally take the view that coaching has had a marked effect - the standard of batting has improved more than the bowling. You will also see that I have commented under some of the specific headings on things that have changed since 1947 - I started playing Club cricket in 1955 so I have seen the vast majority of these changes first hand! These records will be attacked at both ends as time goes by and I delve further back into the past. How far I can go back remains to be seen. The Club is said to have been formed in 1850, and we did celebrate our 150th birthday in the year 2000, but I have always thought that 1850 seems a bit more likely to have been a guess rather than anything else - perhaps I will find out. I do know that Ingatestone’s inaugural match was played against Writtle at Ingatestone on the 27th July 1858 - it is recorded in the Chelmsford Chronicle (now Essex Chronicle). We lost a two Innings game by 3 runs - Ingatestone 59 and 33 - Writtle 63 and 26 - the newspaper says “the small scores being witness to excellent fielding by both parties”. The article also refers to Writtle being “formidable opponents” for the first appearance of the home club. Wendy Hibbitt of Writtle Archives sent me extracts from the Writtle Parish Magazine, covering the period 1886 to 1898, showing that the Cricket Club was very active at that time. When I first started this research I was loaned some Great Waltham scorebooks for this same period, giving details of matches between the two Clubs.
Our ex Secretary Roger Bullen discovered reference in a book to cricketers from Writtle in the 1770s, but despite my best efforts, I have never been able to establish the source of their information. So what follows is what I have discovered since the Club was reformed after the Second World War. I will start with the main Club Records, which cover all matches played by all of the Club’s XIs on any day and then, briefly, show records for specific XIs. I shall be delighted to hear from anybody who finds anything wrong with what follows, or can add anything about these, or previous years, Wherever it appears * denotes “not out” or an unfinished partnership.
October 2009

Big Wins What is the biggest win, 10 wickets, say 200 runs or by an Innings? I have traced 19 x 10 wickets Writtle victories, 6 x 200 and over runs, and 9 by an innings. 10 wickets v Sandon Sports (a) 27.8.2000 Big Defeats Same considerations apply of course. 10 wickets by Brookweald (h) 5.8.2000
Narrow Wins Here the problem is that Writtle 175 Opponents 174 - 8 is a 1 run victory in a League game, but becomes a draw in a Friendly! I have decided to take the result as understood by the teams at the time that the match was played. 1 run v Great Wakering (a) 27.5.2000
Narrow Defeats Similar considerations apply. 5 runs by Corringham (h) 12.8.2000
Ties Another area where the definition differs between League and friendly cricket. For a tie it is merely sufficient in a League game for the scores to be level at the end of the game, but in other cricket the side batting second must be all out. v Great Baddow (a) 21.6.1947 and the technical Ties are as follows - v Basildon II (a) 28.6.1975
Highest Individual Scores 243* S Irving v High Easter (a) 14.8.2004 So far I have traced 174 centuries. The players with the highest number are - 14 P Blackham Most Sixes in an Innings 18 P Dias v Bentley II (a) 30.8.2008 W Gosling v Good Easter (a) 26.5.1947 Unusual Dismissals B Irving Obstructing the Field v Broomfield (h) 23.7.1977
100 Runs and 5 Wickets in a Match R King 146* and 7-40 v Terling (a) 6.7.1958 50 Runs and 5 Wickets in a Match I have found 34 such instances (including the five above). Players who have performed the feat more than once are as follows - 6 times R King Best Bowling 10 - 13 D Salmon v Little Baddow (a) 3.8.1957 C Fitch had 8 wickets in an Innings twelve times. Nobody has taken more than 6 wickets in an Innings in the last ten years. Four Wickets in Four Balls D Little v Stock II (h) 17.5.1958
Hat Tricks I have traced 36 occasions on which a player has taken a hat trick. The following have performed the feat more than once - 3 R Allen The only occasions in the last ten years are as follows - R Saxton v Hockley III (h) 19.5.2001
Four Wickets in Five Balls P Ely v Chignal (h) 6.5.1972 inc hat trick
Most Catches in an Innings 5 A Cook v Estric (h) 12.6.1993 (also made a stumping) I have a note of 19 occasions when 4 catches in an innings have been held.
Most Stumpings in an Innings 4 M Bullen v Roxwell II (a) 6.8.1994 (also held one catch) I have found 10 instances of 3 stumpings in an innings including one where 3 catches were also held. D Scott v Rettendon (a) 8.5.1993
Most Runs in a Season A little difficult this one as I have no details for the early years, but I do not think there were any instances of 1000 runs in a Season before 1983, although D Salmon had 600+ runs by 22.7.1967. The highest Seasons totals are as follows - 1554 (ave. 53.59) P Blackham 1986
A thousand runs in a Season appears to have been achieved 13 times by the P Blackham 5 times
Most Wickets in a Season This one still needs far more research although it appears that C Fitch took 150 wickets in 1952, and 100 on four other occasions. These figures almost certainly included Evening League games, but then little or no Sunday cricket was played in those years. In recent times the highest totals are as follows - 66 (ave. 13.88) D Thrift 1982
1000 Runs and 50 Wickets in a Season D Thrift 1983 1008 (ave. 45.82) and 55 (ave. 10.05)
