Writtle Triumph again against the odds!

Writtle keep their winning run going with a 20 run win against Danbury

Writtles partially changed line up took on Danbury in the second game of the Indoor season.

Having lost the toss Writtle were inserted and began very slowly and Jimmy Hughes struggled to get away the slow but accurate opening bowler.  Jimmy looked uncomfortable (due perhaps to an all day drinking binge the day before) and was bowled for 7 ball duck. (3-1) Lewis Batchford joined the fray and also made a nervous start forgetting perhaps that the indoor form of the game is not for purest!  This uneasy feeling continued and subsequently poor communication ran out the dangerous Wazza. (9-2) New boy Andy Elgar made a positive contribution comfortably finding the gaps and freeing Lewis up also look the part.  Andy unfortunately another victim of a bad call and was run out for a good 10 (33-3) . Paul Fenton carried on his great batting form and hit a number of well struck 4's and 6's.  At this point Lewis had scored 27 and retired allowing the destructive Harris to the crease for the final 4 over assault. Yep..........Fenners called a suicide run and Harris was out without facing a ball. (77-4) Back came Lewis and was promptly bowled. (77-5) So it was up to Fenton to see out the final overs.  He got as far as the 10th over and was fortunately caught for 30 excellent runs. Writtle all out for 85, leaving 2 overs unused.

Danbury must of felt confident going into bat especially as Harris first over went for 7 however, a sharp run out by Elgar result in the first wicket down.  Fenton was on fire...His first over was a wicket maiden Harris clinging on. (7-2) Harris then got amongst the wickets clean bowling the middle order batsman (11-3).  Fenton bowled another maiden before the box of tricks was unleashed to claim another wicket (18-4) Writtle now firmly on top and buzzing!  A solid stand between 3 and 5 ensured Danbury remained in the hunt.  Wazza bowling with excellent discipline never allowing the batsman to dominate.  The pressure finally told with the re- introduction of Fenton having the danger man caught by Harris against the back wall (57-5).  The final wicket fell to Harris. A regulation caught behind to Lewis in the final over.

So, after a shaky batting display Writtle turned on the heat with some excellent bowling and fielding.

Many thanks to Andy Elgar, who made a good contribution.

A special mention to Paul Fenton who not only played his best match for Writtle Indoor side (30 runs, 1 catch and bowling figures of 3-2-7-2) all on the back of some distressing personal loss.  Well-done Fenners!
